Earthy, delicate, restaurant-level mushrooms… growing right on your kitchen counter.

This Blue Oyster Mushroom Grow Kit from Red River Valley Mushrooms makes it surprisingly easy to grow your own fresh gourmet mushrooms at home. Each kit includes a pre-inoculated mushroom block, a spray mister bottle, and step-by-step instructions, so the hardest part is remembering not to stare at it waiting for the mushrooms to pop out.

Blue oyster mushrooms are loved for their soft, velvety texture and mild savory flavor with just a hint of sweetness. When cooked hot and fast, they crisp beautifully around the edges while staying tender in the center — the kind of ingredient that instantly makes dinner feel more thoughtful.

What makes it special

Red River Valley Mushrooms was started in 2020, when Alex and the team began building their farm during the early days of Covid. Five years later, they’re growing fresh mushrooms for families across DFW to enjoy at home. Their farm grows varieties like blue oyster, lion’s mane, shiitake, and more, with each mushroom variety managed for its own ideal growing environment.

Their process is rooted in precision: from maintaining a sterile environment for inoculation to opening grow bags at the right moment and recycling spent mushroom compost back into the earth. As Alex shared, their spent compost helps create a zero-waste cycle and is full of nutrients plants love.

This grow kit brings that same care into your home kitchen, giving you a front-row seat to the growing process from first mist to final harvest.

How to grow

Place your kit somewhere with indirect sunlight, like a kitchen counter or shelf. On day one, open the cardboard window and use a clean knife to cut a small “X” into the grow bag. Mist the opening with 5–6 sprays from the included spray bottle.

Over the next several days, continue misting 2–3 times daily to keep the block humid. Soon, tiny mushroom pins will begin forming, and before long you’ll have full clusters of gorgeous blue oyster mushrooms ready to harvest.

Most kits are harvest-ready around days 10–14. Gently twist or pull the cluster from the base, then continue misting for the chance at a second flush in another week or two.

How we love to use them

Sauté blue oysters in butter or olive oil until golden and crisp around the edges, then finish with flaky salt, garlic, herbs, or a splash of cream.

They’re incredible folded into pasta, spooned over toast, added to ramen, tucked into tacos, stirred into risotto, layered onto pizza, or served alongside steak, chicken, or eggs. Their texture also makes them a great plant-based swap in tacos, grain bowls, and stir fries.

We especially love them cooked with green onions, fresh herbs, and a little Circle N cream for an easy creamy mushroom skillet situation.

What’s in the box

Each kit includes one spray mister bottle, one pre-inoculated Blue Oyster mushroom block, and step-by-step growing instructions.
