Details

Blueberry and lemon come together in this slow-fermented sourdough loaf from Melissa at Messy Buns Sourdough. Bright, fruity, and gently sweet, it brings a little sunshine to breakfast without crossing into dessert-bread territory.

Sourcing & practices

Messy Buns grew from an unexpected chapter in Melissa’s life. After a decade as a registered nurse and the strain of working in the Emergency Department through COVID-19, she began baking sourdough as a healthy outlet. Requests from friends and family soon turned that hobby into a growing small business.

As a one-arm baker, Melissa mixes, shapes, and bakes each loaf using only her right arm. She gives her starter daily care and believes good sourdough comes down to quality ingredients, close attention, and respecting the time fermentation requires. Her starter develops a gentle tang that adds flavor without overpowering the blueberry and lemon.

What to expect

A fruit-forward loaf with pockets of blueberry flavor, bright lemon notes, and the satisfying texture of handmade sourdough. It’s flavorful on its own but especially good warmed or toasted.

How to enjoy it

Serve with butter, cream cheese, ricotta, or a drizzle of honey. It’s also a lovely addition to brunch, an easy afternoon snack, or the beginning of a seriously good French toast.
