Deeply chocolatey sourdough brownies from Melissa at Messy Buns Sourdough, available as a generously sized individual brownie or a full pan made for sharing—at least theoretically.

Sourcing & practices

Messy Buns began after Melissa, a registered nurse of 10 years, turned to sourdough baking as a healthy outlet following the stress of working in the Emergency Department through COVID-19. Friends and family began requesting her bakes, and a hobby slowly became something much bigger.

Melissa lost her left arm in an accident at age five and mixes, shapes, and bakes every Messy Buns product using one arm. She maintains her starter daily and carries the same philosophy throughout everything she makes: use quality ingredients, pay attention, and respect the process.

Here, that starter brings subtle depth and balance to the chocolate without making the brownies taste overtly sour.

What to expect

A rich chocolate brownie with a deeper, more developed flavor than an everyday brownie. Choose the 4 × 4-inch size when you want one seriously substantial treat, or the 8 × 8-inch pan for gatherings, gifting, or keeping several servings on hand.

How to enjoy them

Serve at room temperature or warm slightly and add vanilla ice cream. The full pan is an easy addition to parties, family dinners, teacher gifts, and any situation in which arriving with brownies is the correct answer.
