Details

Suyo Long Cucumber plant from D’Ann Kurhan of Kurhan’s Plant Co. in the Alliance area of North Texas. This wonderfully unusual heirloom cucumber produces sweet, ribbed fruit that can grow up to 15 inches long—and it happens to be one of D’Ann’s favorite “ridiculous vegetables.”

Sourcing & practices

D’Ann grows each plant from organic heirloom seed using OMRI Listed Organic soil. Kurhan’s Plant Co. uses small-scale growing practices focused on reducing disposable plastics and limiting pesticide use. D’Ann’s USA-made, BPA-free pink pots can be returned to her for a discount.

What to expect

Popular in China, Suyo Long is an early-setting, warm-weather variety with excellent eating quality. The fruit is crisp, sweet, and bitter-free, with a curved, ribbed shape that makes it every bit as fun to grow as it is to eat.

Give this vining plant a trellis to encourage straighter cucumbers. Enjoy the fruit fresh in salads, slice it for snacking, or use it for bread-and-butter and mixed vegetable pickles. It stores well and stays satisfyingly crunchy after being cut and refrigerated.

About the grower

D’Ann grows what she calls “weird and wonderful” edible plants, culinary and medicinal herbs, and perennial plants. She believes home gardens should offer more variety than the usual handful of plants found at large stores.

By sharing heirloom and unusual varieties like Suyo Long, D’Ann hopes to introduce local gardeners to new flavors, encourage greater diversity in home gardens, and give more people a reason to feel genuinely delighted by what they grow.
