D’Ann grows each plant from organic heirloom seed using OMRI Listed Organic soil. Her small-scale growing practices are centered on sustainability, limiting pesticide use, and reducing disposable plastics. Kurhan’s Plant Co.’s USA-made, BPA-free pink pots can be returned to D’Ann for a discount.

What to expect

Genovese Basil thrives in full sun and well-draining soil and can grow up to 24 inches tall. Harvest the leaves regularly to encourage a fuller, bushier plant and help prolong its productive season.

Use the fresh leaves for pesto, caprese salads, pasta, pizza, sauces, sandwiches, or anything that could use a little more summer flavor. D’Ann’s own family makes and freezes plenty of pesto, including traditional basil pesto and creative seasonal variations.

About the grower

D’Ann’s connection to gardening began with generations of family growers and continued through years of raising food on balconies, patios, and eventually her own backyard. What started as a way to feed her family well grew into a much larger seed-starting operation filled with organic heirloom vegetables, medicinal herbs, and pollinator-friendly plants.

Today, Kurhan’s Plant Co. gives D’Ann a way to share that curiosity with the community while helping more people grow food they may not find at an ordinary garden center.
