Details

Tulsi Basil plant from D’Ann Kurhan of Kurhan’s Plant Co. in the Alliance area of North Texas. Also known as Kapoor or temperate holy basil, this fast-growing heirloom variety has a distinctive bubble-gum-like scent and brings fragrance, usefulness, and plenty of pollinator activity to the garden.

Sourcing & practices

D’Ann grows each plant from organic heirloom seed using OMRI Listed Organic soil. Kurhan’s Plant Co. focuses on sustainable growing practices that limit pesticide use and single-use plastics. Her signature pink pots are made in the USA, BPA-free, and can be returned to her for a discount.

What to expect

Tulsi is known for its fast-growing nature and greater frost tolerance than many basil varieties, making it a thoughtful choice for a late-summer garden. Grow it outside in a bed or container, or bring it indoors for a continued supply of fresh, aromatic leaves through the winter.

If allowed to flower, Tulsi becomes a magnet for bees and may reseed itself. Its wonderfully unusual fragrance makes it one of those plants you’ll want to brush past every time you walk through the garden.

About the grower

Gardening has been part of D’Ann’s family for generations. She grew up helping in family gardens, later grew food on apartment balconies and patios, and eventually expanded her home seed-starting setup to include organic heirloom vegetables, medicinal herbs, and native pollinator plants.

Kurhan’s Plant Co. grew from her desire to share those unusual varieties with her community and help more people experience the choice, confidence, and connection that come from growing their own food.
